Chapter 13 - Purgatory

The light faded away as I materialized into the same room as Svea and Jakobe.

Jakobe crouched at the window, Svea sat hunched over her keyboard on the other side of her room, her computer station sprawled out in front of her on a folding table. Both of them looked at me with expressions that were quickly turning from hopeful to trepidatious. It clearly wasn’t lost on them that I didn’t have Elena.

“What happened?” Jakobe asked.

Ripping the gas mask off, I keyed my mike. “Tycoon One. Status?”

There was no response.

“Fuck!” I breathed.

“Tycoon One, do you copy?” I said. I unclipped the tear gas launcher and threw it onto the nearby sofa.

“Wang Fan—” Svea began, but I held up my hand to silence her.

Three seconds passed, and grim foreboding gripped my heart.

Then light flared in the room, and I averted my eyes for a moment. When it faded, I looked over to see Saito, with Elena unconscious in his arms. He sagged momentarily, then released one arm, letting her feet slide to the ground and keeping the other arm loosely cradling her neck and shoulders.

I took a step forward. “Give her to me, Itsuki.”

“Do you know what this is?” he asked, holding something up for me to see with his free hand.

I looked at it—a teleportation disc.

I didn’t say anything.

“My third one,” he said. “All I had to do was snap this one instead, and she’d be mine for good. I could have vanished without a trace. No need for negotiating and intrigue.”

I stood there, stock-still.

“Yes, I planned this all along. If you don’t trust me now, I’d say the problem is with you.” He put the disc back in his pocket, then shifted his hands to under Elena’s armpits. He leaned her toward me, and I pulled her into my arms.

“Eagle Two, check in,” Saito said.

“All good here,” Bunny replied. “Are you okay?”

“Wheelman?”

“Ready to go.”

“Stand by.” Holding his abdomen and side tightly with one arm, he limped over and eased himself down into a chair.

Meanwhile, I gently carried Elena over to the sofa, kicked the tear gas launcher out of the way, and lay her down. After scanning her with divine sense, I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary, either technological or cultivation-related. Not that I had any skill diagnosing people. I couldn’t help but think about what happened to Jakobe after falling into Black Corpse hands. As I tried to straighten her hair, my eyes were drawn to a black patch on the side of her neck.

“PP-D,” Itsuki said.

“Paliprox-D?” Svea said, stepping over to the couch.

He nodded.

“You can just pull it off,” Svea told me. “The sedative will keep her unconscious for at least a few hours.”

I carefully pulled the patch off and tossed it into a trashcan off to the side. “What happened back there, Itsuki?”

“That Eldress Cheung of yours really did a number on me. But I managed to grab Elena just in time. That’s it, nothing more.”

“Eldress Cheung?” Jakobe said. “As in, Ursula Cheung?”

“She’s been puppetized,” I explained.
